| Summary | 0001037: useradd (during U2 upgrade) causes 100% CPU utilisation and cannot be killed (on x86_64) | |||||||
| Description | x86_64 machines got stuck with useradd taking up 100% CPU and impossible to kill even with SIGTERM when upgrading to U2. From what I saw, it doesn't seem to be a package in particular, since most were stuck on the nscd scriplet, but at least one was stuck on the openssh scriplet. This is documented on the upstream bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=170087 [^] And in the upstream mailing list: https://www.redhat.com/archives/nahant-list/2005-October/msg00103.html [^] | |||||||

It seems that this bug effects SMP x86_64 machines the hardest, and that it happens on whether using yum or up2date. My best advise to avoid it is: yum update yum then yum update kernel kernel-smp kernel-dev audit audit-libs then reboot and do yum upgrade (If you have an x86_64 SMP machine) |

Hi, I have also problem with useradd. When I start it, it hangs up, stay on terminal get 100% of CPU utilization and I can't kill it by `kill -9 ...` I have to restart whole system to get rid of. 2x3.2 GHz Intel Xeon EM64T, 2GB RAM kernel 2.6.9-11.ELsmp 0000001 SMP --ogee |

This is fixed with shadow-utils-4.0.3-58.RHEL4.src.rpm see: http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2005-842.html [^] make sure to upgrade like this: yum upgrade yum shadow-utils then yum upgrade |
