Not a centosplus bug, however via c3 is i586. Make sure you're using the proper arch. |

problem solving will go a long way if you can provide more detail about your setup. lspci, hardware description, where you see the hang, etc. provide detail please. |

Sorry for the vague description. Via C3 800MHz CPU, 2 x 512Mb RAM. I'm at a loss to establish what causes the hang as nothing works after it has happened. It usually occurs on 1st boot where you are asked to pick time zones etc. If I'm quick I can get past the 1st boot setup when it will hang before the full desktop is loaded. I will post a fuller list of hardware when I return home. |

I am another user who is also experiencing this problem. I have tried the install both with and without the i586 option, but had the same problem either way. The installation process runs smoothly, but at (apparently) random points in the boot process, the system hangs. I have tried various bios configurations without finding any difference. Memory tests find no problems. I have two of these motherboards, and the problem is the same with both. All other system components have also been substituted. Motherboard is a VIA EPIA 800 Mini-ITX, C3 E series 800 mhz processor, 384mb memory. VIA Apollo PLE133 North Bridge, VIA VT8231 South Bridge, AC-97 audio. Thanks for any assistance you can render. |

I have done the following additional testing since my previous post: 1) Re-installed OS as a text only system. system generally operated for a longer time before locking up, but it did still lock up. 2) Installed windows XP pro. System has been running flawlessly under windows for 48+ hours of un-interrupted operation. Research elsewhere on the net indicates that perhaps linux executes an instruction not implemented in this processor. I am not looking to be handed a solution on a silver platter, but I would really appreciate any guidance on how to proceed in resolving this. Thanks! |

Reminder sent to: jmattwood Are you still following (and/or working with) the bug you reported regard the C3 and OS lockups? If so, I would be interested to hear of anything you might have learned, or collaborating on this. I have noted my experience to date on your bug report. If we do not get a response on your submission in the next couple of days I will file a new bug report under my name. |

At the risk of heresy here, have you tried other linux distributions to see if it's fixed in more recent kernel builds (assuming it's a missing instruction)? If you'd be willing to test fedora core5 or ubuntu, that may give some clues as to where the issue lies. |

Gentoo works - my next door neighbour is actually a Gentoo admin. CentOS 3.6 works flawlessly. In fact I'm posting this from v3.6 WinXP works flawlessly. Asterisk@home 2.2, which includes a CLI only version of CentOS behaves the same as the full distro of 4.x - hangs shortly after boot up. I will test any distro you suggest - let me have a URL for the download & i'll get on with it. No response from kbsingh@karan.org |

So just out of curiosity, is cpuspeed on or off on your machines? We had a report of this being possibly linked to cpuspeed, which is part of the kernel-utils package. You might try chkconfig cpuspeed off, and service cpuspeed stop. It may be the system trying to throttle the cpu back that's causing the system stability issues, and it defaults to on on centos4. Please check your configs, and disable cpuspeed. |

I have a VIA c3 also. I was experiencing a lockup problem also. I seemed to notice it when I was attepting to perform a yum update/install or durring a ./configure or make. I was getting sometimes about 15 minutes of uptime before the machine would lock. Today I used: chkconfig cpuspeed off and rebooted. So far the machine has been up for me all day except when I rebooted it. I did notice that chkconfig left cpuspeed still active for runlevel 1, but I didnt go to single user to see if the problem still existed. The cpuspeed service is actualy running on a few Intel servers I manage and doesn't seem to cause a problem. If cpuspeed needs to be installed then I would suggest that when it is installed the service does not start running automaticly and users can optionaly turn it on if they want. cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : CentaurHauls cpu family : 6 model : 9 model name : VIA Nehemiah stepping : 8 cpu MHz : 1199.925 cache size : 64 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr cx8 mtrr pge cmov pat mmx fxsr sse rng rng_en ace ace_en bogomips : 2401.76 lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. I have been suspecting cpuspeed, however, considering I can't get past 1st boot, is it easy to disable? BTW, Fedora Core 5 works fine |
|
(0003395) kbsingh@karan.org (administrator) 2006-04-15 21:17 |
you should be able to enter intactive startup and disable any services not required. |
|
(0003397) jmattwood (reporter) 2006-04-15 22:49 |
Is there some special way of entering interactive mode............other than pressing I when told to do so? If not, then Interactive Mode is broken also! |
|
(0003398) Evolution (developer) 2006-04-15 23:30 |
at the grub prompt, chose a to append an option to the kernel line, and add the number 1. Further details are in the documentation on the centos website. |

Finally had time to try disabling cpuspeed. IT WORKS!!! The system has been running several hours without any lock-ups. I got into interactive mode using the "whack-a-mole" approach (held down the "I" key). I guess putting a "1" on the kernel line would have saved me the trouble? Anyway, thanks gang! |

(0003426) jmattwood (reporter) 2006-04-20 22:03 |
Yes, thanks from me too. I disabled cpuspeed & have been up & running for 36 hours. Pressing I wouldn't get me into interactive mode, nor would appending a 1 to the kernel, however, appending confirm did alow me to stop cpuspeed. I then disabled it in services to stop it running a next reboot. |
