Summary 0002725: Please add megaraid support to live CD
Description Hi All,

The Live CD 5.1 will not start the GUI (GNOME?) on my
server as it is missing the MegaRAID drivers. (You just
get popped into a shell with a note that it can not
find the root file system.)

Would you consider adding megaraid support so I can
demonstrate this thing on my "enterprise" servers? Otherwise
I am confined to demo'ing it on workstations. It is
also a pain when I need to use the Live CD to troubleshoot
a server.

On the other hand, it works in Virtual Box.

Many thanks,
-T

Don't open the same bug twice, please.

Actually, it is not the same bug. The duplicate you mentioned can be
fixed by not adding megaraid support. But, simply put, fix the
boot sequence such that gnome starts with or without megaraid
support.

This bug is to add megaraid support. The other one was to fix the
crash caused by a megaraid card, even without megaraid support.

You can build a custom LiveCD and add megaraid support on it. See https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/ [^]

The official CentOS LiveCD is using the CentOS kernel. If that kernel doesn't support megaraid, the CentOS LiveCD is not going to support it either.

Hi Froggy,

Thank you for the Link!

This computer that I am writing you this message on is using the official
stock (YUM) kernel (kernel-2.6.18-8.1.15.el5) AND is operating off
a Mega RAID 150-4 card.

So, this is not an "Enhancement"; this is an actual bug.

Please change the subject to the status to one of the "Bug" status
and the subject to "Please correct megaraid support in live CD "

Many thanks,
-T

The problem may come from the hard disk and LVM detection script. At the grub boot loader screen, type "a" to edit the default entry. Add " single" to boot at runlevel 1. Edit /etc/init.d/centos-live and remove lines 81 to 195. Then switch to runlevel 5 with "init 5".

If this does not solve your problem, please provide relevant log messages regarding this issue. I don't have a megaraid card at hand so I cannot reproduce it.

Hi Froggy,

I won't be able to check this out till the weekend. In case
it fails, which logs did you want?

Interesting info may be logged in:
/var/log/messages
/var/log/dmesg

You may also execute "lsmod" to list active kernel modules.

Any chance of adding Megaraid support to the upcoming 5.3 Live CD? The install disk supports it in rescue mode. Any possibility of lifting the install CD's megaraid support and putting it into the Live CD?

Many thanks,
