Summary0012096: Network manager applet icon does not appear - is connected, but says it is not
DescriptionLogging into gnome/desktop sometimes the network manager applet will not appear.

Checking network settings show it is connected.

Clicking on the icon area the network shows as connected. However, if you click on the current network device it says 'Connect'.

Steps To ReproduceLogin and see the issue. Only happens sometimes.
Additional InformationThis happens on bare metal and virtual machines.

Don't ask why, but this issue can be alleviated by adding a '.drirc' file in your HOME folder with the following contents to turn off vsync.
