PlatformKVM/QEMUOSCentOSOS Version7.3
Product Version7.3.1611
Target VersionFixed in Version
Summary0012667: CentOS 7.3.1661 fails to boot when chainloaded from iPXE and hangs
DescriptionMy host machine is:
Lubuntu 16.10,
kernel 4.8.0-34-generic
QEMU emulator version 2.6.1 (Debian 1:2.6.1+dfsg-0ubuntu5.1)

It seems that with the recent transition to CentOS 7.3(.1611) the kernel is no longer bootable from ipxe.efi (the UEFI Binary for iPXE). iPXE will download the kernel + initrd from http://mirror.rit.edu/ and then proceed to hang. From talking to the nice folks over at #ipxe on freenode it seems to be something related to pre-3.16 kernels. As a reference I was also pointed to these forums posts:

CentOS 7.3.1611 is not bootable from ipxe.efi and booting just fails in a hang.
Steps To Reproduce(Assuming from scratch)
Install Lubuntu (or any official ubuntu flavor) 16.10

Install all updates

Create a VM with:

CentOS 7.0
Q35 Chipset
VirtIO NIC (as the first boot option)

Try to:

Boot VM
Press crtl + B to get to the iPXE prompt
enter the dhcp command to acquire an IP address
enter: chain http://adriankoshka.xyz/boot/linux/fed/centos.ipxe
Choose CentOS 7 64-bit install from the menu
See it simply hang! :c
Additional InformationBoth NiXZe (from #ipxe) and I were able to reproduce this hang.

Johnny will provide a new set of respin with the 1701 media at the end of the month (Jan 2017).

Was a new cut of the media ever produced? We've hit this issue as well

tru (administrator)

Can you check the 1701/1702 release and tell us if that works for you?

wildefire (reporter)

The initrd and vmlinuz included in the 1702 media are the same as that included in the 1611 media and do not work still.
i did not check the 1701 media since 1702 was a newer cut and still had the old versions.

Sorry for responding so late, it's been a while so a little has change. I'm now on the 17.04 release of Lubuntu, and still having the same issue sadly. :c

AdrianKoshka (reporter)

This should be taken with a grain of salt, but as of last note, I've moved to fedora26, and am now testing with CentOS7.4, and the issue seems to be resolved. I would obviously need to test the same on Ubuntu to confirm the error is totally resolved.
