Summary0013717: CR 7.4 packages break support for Skylake i5-6600U Intel HD520 graphics
DescriptionInstalling the latest packages from CR repository has broken OS start up to a graphical target.

The problem was temporarily resolved by downgrading all of the xorg-\* packages, since a full blown downgrade (yum transaction rollback) is not possible (dependencies cannot be satisfied.

Here's an excerpt from Xorg.log:

[ 28.507] (EE) No devices detected.
[ 28.508] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 28.508] (EE) no screens found(EE)
[ 28.508] (EE)
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
         at http://wiki.x.org
 for help.
[ 28.508] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.5.log" for additional information.
[ 28.508] (EE)
[ 28.522] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.

Steps To ReproduceInstall CentOS 7.4 CR repository packages and reboot.
Additional InformationOther than the latest kernel, I've tried booting old kernels, kernel-ml and kernel-lt, but to no avail.

Attached are the Xorg log files right after the upgrade (when X server starting fails), and after the downgrade, when is succeeds

This Red Hat bug report looks related, if not exactly the same issue:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1445583

The issue persists even after upgrading to 7.4, so I had to downgrade xorg packages to get X server working.

I'm wondering if this is the right bug tracker to submit the issue?
... judging by the number of xorg packages rebased in upstream, and this particular bug:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1342748

which is merely assumed to be fixed.

On top of X server not starting with the latest packages, the working set is as follows:

xorg-x11-drv-ati-7.6.1-3.20160215gitd41fccc.el7.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-dummy-0.3.6-21.el7.x86_64

xorg-x11-server-utils-7.7-14.el7.x86_64
xorg-x11-utils-7.5-14.el7.x86_64

power save features don't seem to be working at all - battery is drained after 4h, as opposed to 8h+ before the upgrade.

This is really annoying, and I'd be happy to help in resolving this if any of the developers were to point me in the right direction to work on this/report it.

milosb (reporter)

Thanks Tru.

To correct myself:

My chipset/CPU is: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6300U CPU @ 2.40GHz

but it's the same graphics, 00-keyboard.conf, and I don't had /etc/X11/xorg.conf... Xorg packages are behind (only that way it works), and I didn't have xorg-x11-{xbitmaps,apps} installed - but those didn't make any difference.

What am I missing?

Still can't figure out if this is a case for the bug tracker, or the support forum. But since everything worked like a charm until the packages were rebased, and judging by the RedHat issues quoted above, I'd say it's a bug.
