Product Version6.9

Summary0014454: Kernel 2.6.32-696.20.1 and latest xen-tools crashes VM
DescriptionWith kernel 2.6.32-696.20.1.el6.x86_64 AND the latest version of xe-tools-distribution enabled (xe-linux-distribution startup service, provided by these two official rpm):

VM hangs on boot (see screenshot).

If I disabled the xe-linux-distribution service (which I obviously need) VM starts correctly.

Other kernels:
kernel 2.6.32-696.16.1.el6.x86_64 -> VM boots fine, everything ok
kernel-ml -> 4.15.0-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 -> no boot at all
kernel-lt -> 4.4.113-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 -> VM boots fine, xe-linux-distribution service ok, everything working !

Any advice would be appreciated...

I've also experienced this with XenServer 7.0 (CentOS 6 x64 PV guest), xe-guest-utilities-7.0.x/xe-guest-utilities-xenstore-7.0.x.

Removing those packages resolves the issue and allows the VM to boot normally (otherwise it hangs on the xe service), but that's obviously less than ideal.

We also have the same problems with kernel 2.6.32-696.20.1.el6.x86_64 and XenServer.

We tested some different scenarios:

XenServer 7.0, CentOS 6 x64 PV guest, XenTools 7.0.0-24 >> Boot failed
XenServer 7.1 LTSR, CentOS 6 x64 PV guest, XenTools 7.1.0-41 >> Boot failed
XenServer 7.1 LTSR, CentOS 6 x64 PV guest, XenTools 7.3.0-1 >> Boot failed

Allways the same, after the new kernel is installed and the vm rebooted it stops during the boot when Linux starts the xe daemon during boot. Sometimes you can see error messsages on the console. (screenshot attached)

No Problems with kernel 2.6.32-696.16.1.el6.x86_64 in all 3 scenarios.

I iterated some Xen tools versions with kernel-2.6.32-696.20.1.el6.x86_64 on XenServer 6.2.

Here are my results:

xe-guest-utilities-6.5.0-1432.x86_64 - ok
xe-guest-utilities-7.1.0-41.x86_64 - broken
xe-guest-utilities-7.3.0-1.x86_64 - broken
xe-guest-utilities-7.4.0-1.x86_64 - ok

Correction to my previous comment: I meant XenServer 7.2, not 6.2.

I have expirienced this issue, had to remove the xe-guest rpms.

Also in the same issue when we try to migrate from PV to HVM, the kernel does not boot.

Steps done based on this url:

After the steps are done, the GRUB starts on boot and tells that will load the kernel [latest] in 3 sec, after that a black screen shows with a cursor blinkinkg 2 times and then VM shutdown with no error.

Boot log does not get updated.

Using 6.9 PV to HVM in Xen 7.0

Any help thanks,

Further update:

kernel-2.6.32-696.20.1.el6.x86_64 AND xe-guest-utilities-7.9.0-1.x86_64.rpm
is working !

ixohack (reporter)

Themiz thanks for sharing, how did you get this xe-guest-utilities-7.9.0-1.x86_64.rpm packages?

Dont see them on Xen 7.0

themiz (reporter)

Found in the xenserver 7.3 iso:

where you find xenserver-pv-tools-7.21.0-1.noarch.rpm; inside the rpm there is the iso installer, containing:

....I still don't know if they are fully backword compatible...
