Summary0014791: Kernel Panic booting with 3.10.0-862.2.3.el7.x86_64
DescriptionA kernel panic occurs during boot:

`Kernel panic - not synching: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)`

This could be related to this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/41930/kernel-panic-not-syncing-vfs-unable-to-mount-root-fs-on-unknown-block0-0

There is a message about TSC_DEADLINE in the line before, which relates to this issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/intel-microcode/+bug/1724650

This has started happening after upgrading to CENTOS 7.5. In fact, the PC crashed mid-installation, rebooted and displayed the kernel panic message. Now, if rebooting and using 3.10.0-862.2.3.el7.x86_64, the crash occurs. It might be only that the initramfs is missing, as suggested in the askubuntu forum. Sorry, I'm unsure how to get the logs for the initial crash and reboot (from the upgrade). Any hints, I am happy to give it a try.

I can still use the workstation if I boot using kernel version 3.10.0-693.21.1.el7.x86_64.
Steps To ReproduceReboot PC and choose latest kernel version (3.10.0-862.2.3.el7.x86_64) or let the PC boot using this version automatically.

I am having the same problems with the new kernel and had to revert back kernel version 3.10.0-693.21.1.el7.x86_64.

After workstation login the system is in a reboot loop with kernel 3.10.0-862.2.3.el7.x86_64.

> After workstation login the system is in a reboot loop with kernel 3.10.0-862.2.3.el7.x86_64.

What are the stages you see? Are there any messages? Did the upgrade complete successfully? (In my case it didn't, and an unexpected reboot during upgrade caused the problem of a missing initramfs).

It sounds slightly different to my problem: my workstation would freeze after reboot, showing the screen I photo'd and shared, I would have to manually power-cycle with the button on the front of the workstation (ie. hard reset).

If it is similar to the problem I experienced, did you try the solution I found? (See other notes.)

I had to power cycle using my power button as well.

No messages strangely.... After login, my machine should either get stuck at the splash screen after GUI log in or completely reboot.

On the upgrade, yeah it completely rebooted when it finished sadly. I chose a previous kernel and uninstalled & reinstalled the kernel.

Bizarro!

Apologies, I don't understand this bug tracker fully, there seems to be multiple IDs for this ticket: the solution is on the ticket with ID 14794 (https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=14794). It's the same issue, but with more notes.

Sounds like a different problem, so the solution won't help

Of course, it might not be this, but it have been worth mentioning: could it be the video driver? In my experience, this is one of the things which can cause problems with loading the desktop after an upgrade. For example, when upgrading from CentOS 7.2, upwards, then the FGLRX driver for AMD cards is no longer compatible with the version of X which is packaged with CentOS 7.3+ and causes problems. In this case, uninstall "fglrx" and install the "radeon" driver.

You might be able to switch session from the broken desktop session to do this modification. When you get the stuck splash, hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 and login and do the stuff.

First thing to do is to remove rhgb quiet from the kernel command line so you can see what happens. If the system crashes after it's booted up then I would suggest booting in the equivalent of runleve 3 to see if it still does it. If it does not then start the various services you need active one by one until it crashes and then you know more about the problem.

Seems like noveau may be having a problem with the new kernel.

Now I have a NVIDIA card on my machine but the NVIDIA drivers dont play well on Centos 7 for this box hence my usage of Noveau.

The proprietary NVIDIA driver (the 'short lived' version) was last updated on the 2nd of May and the long lived version was updated 28th of March. Have you got an older card that uses one of the legacy drivers? (...a bit like me with my slightly dated AMD card needing the fglrx rather than the amdgpu...).

Well you might want to try the latest drivers from NVIDIA to see if they play more nicely now. When was the last time you tried the NVIDIA driver?

Am I right in thinking you've got an HP Pavilion Power Laptop 15 with a GeForce GTX 1050 or a GTX 1050 Ti? These GPUs are supported by the latest NVIDIA drivers (both short and long term).

What was the issue you had with CentOS 7 and the graphics? Which desktop are you using? I'm not sure if this matters, but it might.

Hey Doc,

I kept looping with the NVIDIA drivers I tried, but I am willing to give it another go. I am using KDE desktop presently. Let me try this ... I am going to go back up in kernel level and try to install the newest NVIDIA drivers.

I have: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile] (rev a1)

Look at using ELRepo's kmod-nvidia* packages for this. They have an nvidia-detect package that gives you a command of the same name that, when run, will tell you which of their packages you need to support your adapter.

Good idea, TrevorH! Interested, I looked this up:
https://elrepo.org/tiki/kmod-nvidia

There is a reported issue with conflict in X in EL7, if you scroll to the bottom of the linked page there is information on that one.

Ok ok... let me do this... I am going to go to the bumblebee suggestion you made back in 2017. I bet that will fix my kernel problems and get me off of nouveau which is causing a lot of problems on the latest kernel.
