Summary0015186: Cannot boot with kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64
DescriptionAfter installing the recent kernel (kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64), my system can no longer boot. Grub comes up, I select the new kernel and the screen goes black with a white solid box cursor on the top left. At this point keyboard doesn't respond at all and the system just sits there. I've tried removing quiet from the kernel parameters to see if I could get some error messages but no additional messages are produced after selecting the latest kernel. Selecting the previous kernel works and brings the system back up.

Hello,

As an independent user, I may confirm that at least three different CentOS 6.10 machines in my network are affected by this bug (suddenly became unbootable), after upgrading (online) to kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64 via official yum repositories.

Those three machines *do* boot normally with older kernels, such as kernel-2.6.32-754.2.1.el6.x86_64

Best regards,
Răzvan

Same here. After updating a VPS host to kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64 it did not boot. Rolled back to 2.6.32-696.30.1.el6.x86_64, things work again.

You need to remove both rhgb and quiet from the kernel command line to see normal boot messages. If you only remove quiet, you won't see much.

I have removed both and no messages appear. As soon as grub vanishes I have a solid white box cursor on the top left of the screen. Num lock, caps lock, ctrl+alt+delete are all frozen at this point.

I see the same. I ran into this on a set of VMs using the Xen Piravirt hypervisor. I tried it on another VM built using the KVM hypervisor and it successfully rebooted. The working machines also did not have microcode installed.

In case you are experiencing this with Xen guest VM:

A workaround is documented at https://access.redhat.com/solutions/3551871 (Red Hat login required)

Basically, add the following to the kernel command line: eagerfpu=off

This can be accomplished for example with the following: grubby --update-kernel=ALL --args=eagerfpu=off

Has there been any progress on figuring out the cause? Is there some set of options (remove both rhgb and quiet does not add any messages) to get more debugging info that I can run and provide that feedback with?

CentOS is a community supported distribution. No-one goes hunting for the cause of obscure bugs and there are no kernel hackers looking at the source code. If you want support then you should be looking at buying the upstream RHEL and a support contract. As it is, if and when Redhat find the cause and fix it then CentOS will inherit the fix.

Did you try the eagerfpu parameter mentioned?

eagerfpu=off does not work.

I understand CentOS is a community supported distro and there is no guarantee of finding support but giving there is a bug tracker it seems logical that someone would be occasionally looking/checking, if only in the event a related bug shows up that narrows down the issue. I also wanted to know if there is any kernel arguments to get more debug info; grub goes straight to a black screen after it launches this kernel; I see nothing giving any indications of why the system has halted.

I have tried this on another system with similar hardware; its primary difference is its a gen 2 intel where this one is a gen 3. it doesn't have this issue so it seems likely to be related to the processor. I've also try the recent Fedora Live CDs and can boot successfully from them, making me think its something to do with this specific kernel and not the general specter fix that was introduced.

Hello all,

I don't know if this helps, but here are three types of processors on
some machines where I've hit this bug (all on CentOS 6.x, kernel
kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64):

Also affected: https://ark.intel.com/products/71073/Intel-Celeron-Processor-G1620-2M-Cache-2_70-GHz

Exactly the same behavior as described by jpdied. The system is a Celeron G1620 on Asrock H61M-VG4 with 2 GByte DDR3.
Only working workaround is to select and boot the older 2.6.32-654.2.1.el6.x86_64 kernel.

The same problem with: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1240 V2 @ 3.40GHz
I cannot boot after yum update using kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64
Unfortunately for me i went back to the old kernel-2.6.32-754.2.1.el6.x86_64.

Same issue with kernel 2.6.32-754.6.3.el6 as well. System freezes immediately after grub. Had to go back to 2.6.32-754.2.1.el6.

Looks like it is a problem between grub.efi and kernel. I had the same problem on one server, but both kernel 2.6.32-754.3.5 and 2.6.32-754.6.3 now boot OK after removing EFI boot partition; switching from GPT to msdos partition with MBR (didn't check if GPT with bios grub would work) and reinstalling grub.

So could this be more of a grub issue than a kernel issue? Those of us using 2+ TB partitions can't simply switch to MBR.
