Summary0002103: Panic in bnx2_poll on Dell PE2950
Description
Running kernel-PAE-2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.i686 on a Dell PE2950
as a busy NFS server.

About once or twice a week, I get a crash in bnx2_poll
(driver for Broadcom Net Xtreme II gigabit ethernet NIC).

An almost identical issue was fixed in RHEL4.5:

   http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212055

but this fix was not included in RHEL5. I've logged a bug
with Red Hat on this:

   http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=242060

The fix has already been in Linus' GIT tree since Dec 2006.

Would you consider releasing a CentOS kernel update before Red Hat
update their kernel RPMs?

no.

But if there is a requirement, we can roll in some changes into our plus kernel, as long as its not going to be too divergent from upstream. Re-assigning to Johnny, who handles the Plus kernels

Same issue on IBM eSERVER BC 2x2000 with kernel :
2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 #1 SMP Thu May 17 03:16:52 EDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

nfs reads from clients ends with kernel panic :(

Im thinking of try the driver from broadcom:

You may also find this patch of interest:

I'm having the same problem on a HP DL580 G4, CentOS 5 fully updated. It panics about once a week with a combination of rsync and iSCSI traffic.

Is there an estimate on when the next kernel patch will be available? We seem to be due for one.

Thanks.

dondrake:
While you wait, you can install the drivere from broadcom.
It's easy, and works :)

I did some tracking of the upstream kernel sources and it appears that this kernel panic should be fixed in 2.6.18-53.el5.

This should be part of the CentOS 5.1 release.

FWIW, I just had a Dell server hit this using 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5 and looking at the source of 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5 and 2.6.18-8.1.15.el5, neither appear to have the appropriate patch.

The 2.6.18-53.el5 kernel in RHEL 5.1 indeed has this patch.

An excerpt from linux-2.6-net-bnx2-update-to-driver-version-1-5-11.patch:

From: Andy Gospodarek <gospo@redhat.com>
Subject: [RHEL5.1 PATCH] bnx2: update to driver version 1.5.11
Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2007 14:44:34 -0400
Bugzilla: 225350

Patches to at least 1.5.5 have been included in my test kernels for
quite a while and Broadcom confirmed they were working well. These
latest updates have been tested by myself and seem to be OK as well.
Broadcom has also been advising that we go to 1.5.11 since the most
recent versions contained some critical fixes.
