Summary | 0002321: Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception
Description | System crashes every 2 to 3 days with a kernel panic. I'm running the current (2.6.18-8.1.8.el5) "stock" x86_64 kernel. Here is part of what I can see on the screen after the crash: -- RIP [<address>] rt_check_expire+0xb3/0x15d RSP <address> CR2: address <0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Faltal excption -- See attached screen capture for full output.
Additional Information | Hard drives are in RAID1 configuration with LVM running an a RAID1 device. Another crash on the same machine: RIP [<address>] rt_run_flush+0x81/0xb8 RSP <address> CR2: address <0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Faltal excption Same kernel panic, different function. I have unloaded the sata_via and libata kernel modules based on a post I found Googleing for this problem. |

Yet another crash. RIP [<address>] __dentry_open+0x7e/0x1dc RSP <address> CR2: address <0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Faltal excption Any ideas on how to debug this? |
|
I think I have figured out the problem. I disabled the onboard VIA Velocity network card and replaced it with a Netgear 10/100 (tulip) in a PCI slot. The system has now been running for 6 days. The problem is either a bad hardware or a bad driver. Since I had random crashes on another Abit AV8 running CentOS 5, I think it is a driver problem. |
|
I continued to have kernel panics even after disabling the onboard NIC, but they were less frequent. I had pretty much given up on finding the cause of the kernel panics. I have the same motherboard on a workstation and last week I tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 and ran into frequent crashes. In the process of debugging the issue I installed the latest BIOS: 28 (5/7/2006). It cured the crashes. I have installed the new BIOS on the server and have switched back to using the onboard NIC. So far no crashes. |
|
I installed V-box yesterday,So Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception .Today I uninstalled it ,and Success
But My os is CentOS 6.0 | |
