Summary0002443: X server does not start on reboot (/tmp/.X0-lock file prevents it)
DescriptionI did a clean install of CentOS 5 (i386). After the OS finishes the install, I get the firstboot screens where I am asked to setup a user, firewall setting, etc. I choose to enable kerneldump so the system reboots after the firstboot stuff is done. When the system comes back up, I get the login screen in text mode. If I type startx, I get the following message:

Fatal server error:
server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer runningm remove
  /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

After removing it, I can get into graphical mode. However, once I reboot the system, I get the same behavior and I have to delete .X0-lock again.

Instead of removing this file, press ctrl+alt+f7, and see if you have an X environment there already. You should not have to enter 'startx' as runlevel 5 is the default.

Thanks Evolution. After pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, x environment did come up with login info.

But why it x environment does not come up as it suppose to come?
