DescriptionThe system in question shares an xfs file system over nfs. A few minutes after boot the kernel crashes. I assume it happens as soon as the machine is contacted by an nfs client. Happens in 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64. The machine runs stable with 2.6.32-279.14.1.el6.x86_64 (not centos plus) for hours now.

Turns out to be a rather subtle issue.

Has a similar report and it turns out that the problem is that /var/lib/nfs cannot sit on a xfs partition.

I can confirm the fix given in the link:

make a partition with a non-xfs file system, sync the contents from /var/lib/nfs and mount the partition on /var/lib/nfs and the issue goes away.

The problem is present in both centos plus and standard kernels since 2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64.

I created a logical volume, formatted that as ext4 and cloned /var/lib/nfs with tar.

Can someone test to see if the current kernel still has the problem reported here? More specifically kernel 2.6.32-358.13.1.el6 or later? The following line in the section of 2.6.32-358.13.1.el6 of the changelog seems relevant:

By the way "nfs4 recovery" refers to the /var/lib/nfs/v4recovery directory.

@toracat, we had the same issue and we were running 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6. Fixed temporarily by making /var/lib/nfs a symlink to /nfs/, since our / partition was ext3.

Upgraded to 2.6.32-358.18.1.el6 and put the partition back and indeed the problem is fixed now.
